Living a Healthy Lifestyle

Do you want to live a healthy lifestyle, but aren’t sure where to start? Here are a few ideas for creating sustainable change.

Understand your intentions and your patterns

Why do you want to make a change? What’s your underlying motivation beyond wanting a physical change to your body? Also, look at your patterns from previous attempts to make changes. What held you back? At what point did you give up or stop moving toward your goal? This can be a key awareness in understanding your previous behavior and how to shift it.

Set specific goals

When you have realistic goals— whether they are habit related goals or weight loss goals— it sets you up for success. What exactly are you hoping to change? How do you want to feel? Are you ready to commit long-term? Write down your goals.

Ask for accountability

Let someone you know and trust know about your goals. Accountability is essential if we want to make a big change! Have your friend, family member, colleague, or workout buddy there for support, to ask questions, and to share when you’re feeling any strong emotions about the experience.

Establish a movement routine

If you’re not used to exercising much, walking can be a great starting place. Cardio exercises such as running or biking are also great for working up a sweat. Strength training helps build muscle and can boost metabolism. Aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day, but even just a few minutes of physical activity is better than none at all.

Focus on improving your sleep and hydration

These are two often underrated yet essential parts of health! How well are you sleeping? How much water are you drinking throughout the day? Start by simply logging these so that you are aware of your current habits. Then, work towards your goals to get enough sleep and to stay hydrated.

Meditate

Meditation is a great tool for stress relief and also for getting to know yourself in deeper ways. It is a beautiful addition to any healthy lifestyle goals you may have.

Track your progress and find ways to stay motivated

This may include joining an active community group in your local area, keeping a food and exercise journal, or finding a support group online. Find whatever works for you, and stay consistent with it. If you’re struggling, you might also consider a unique approach, like hypnosis for weight loss, energy work, an app, or signing up for an event that gives you something specific to train for. Celebrate your successes along the way and continue to refine and adjust your goals as you go.
