Meet Nadia, a Coach Who Teaches with a 'Train Your Mind, Change Your Body' Approach

Today on Alive in the Fire, I’m excited to share a powerful and uplifting interview with Nadia Murdock, the founder of Nadia Murdock Fit. Nadia’s background is in fitness, psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, coaching and writing.

I love what Nadia has to say about resilience, not comparing yourself to others, and getting out of her comfort zone in her career.

Hope you find as much inspiration from the interview as I did!

Tell us about your background. What led you to a healthy lifestyle and to teaching and coaching?

Our life's purpose is never linear; I know this for a fact! I graduated with a BA in Psychology with the desire to work as a forensic psychologist but after a few internships I quickly realized this was not the path for me. During this time a lot of lessons were being thrown my way both mentally and physically that I didn't always realize at the time.

After working for a year post-grad I decided to pursue a masters in communications. Fast forward a few years I wasn't feeling full-filled and always felt drawn to health and wellness since I battled with my weight and emotional well-being freshman year of college. I decided to start writing for a fitness column part-time as a side hustle. That side hustle led me to become a certified instructor, start tapping into my degrees and create Nadia Murdock Fit.

How has writing been a positive influence in your life? What are you working on now as a writer, any current projects you're excited about?

I love this question! Writing has led me to connect with so many amazing fitness professionals, celebrities, small business owners, women, educators and much more! My experience as a writer has truly helped to grow my mindset. Right now I am offering my expertise for various publications as they arise (I have been quoted in SELF, Women's Health, Bustle and much more). I would love to write my second book (first book here) and screenplay, this is me putting it into the universe to help hold myself accountable.

What have been some of the most important moments in your career? What has helped you build confidence?

Those important moments were not always enjoyable at the time but they pushed me to think differently, know my worth and know when to let go. There have been business collaborations that didn't workout as planned but it forced me to see that I didn't have to play it small or over deliver to receive validation as long as the validation starts from within. There are personal circumstances within my life that encouraged me to become more vulnerable in sharing my story which ultimately helped others with their own obstacles. There are SO many lessons in our lives that can make us stronger if we take the time to see them.

Do you have any mentors? How have they influenced and inspired you?

I would say my peers over time have really inspired me. The more I evolved as a person the more I wanted to be in the room where conversations got me fired up about life. When I started paying attention to the lessons I was paying more attention to a lot of other things too including who I spent my time with.

What has helped you overcome your fears and build confidence?

Not seeking validation from others and recognizing my own worth. This was a huge game changer for me.

What advice do you have for new teachers or coaches, or women who are just starting out in their career?

Don't do what other people are doing; do what you want to do and don't worry if it's already been done it hasn't been done by you. Your own story and experiences make you and your service unique!

You've been featured on a number of national media outlets and you've created a powerful community. What helped you achieve success? Were there certain technical skills or strategies? How did mindset play a role?

Having a background in PR and marketing helped a bit but the biggest thing was creating and maintaining relationships. I also had a media coach (Sabina Hitchen) at the time that helped push me to get out of my comfort zone. Over the years I have met so many people that may not have been able to help me in that moment but by maintaining a relationship it benefited me down the road. Also getting out of my own head, it can be intimidating to go on live TV, remembering I know my worth and what I have to offer allows future opportunities to come to me.

What have been some turning points in your life and your career? What did those moments teach you?

Resilience! There is always a lesson to be learned in the hardships we face. In the moment it's important to feel all the feelings but don't dwell there because that can immobilize you.

Tell us more about your mindset coaching programs. What do you find is most impactful for the clients you work with?

The most impactful result is self-discovery and starting to take charge of your life again. It's all connected past traumas, what you feel in your body, the standards you set for yourself. Once you are empowered and in charge, your mental and physical health start to improve. Clients can work with me 1:1, small group or through my power call options if you just need a reboot.

What do you like to do for fun, for rest and relaxation? What helps you stay balanced?

Pouring into me! That means I have movements scheduled from kickboxing to yoga. I also enjoy pampering myself with pedicures and massage, enjoying a good audio book or podcast. I try to keep things simple so that it can be practiced regularly.
