Water, Water: Blog Action Day 2010!

Photo by yours truly. Coast to coast, we can't afford to take our water for granted.

It's time to talk about water. I hope if you're reading this and are an avid blogger, you'll consider joining me for Blog Action Day 2010 (note the header that's been chillin' at the top of my homepage for awhile now! It's for a great cause, people!)

Anyway, water is important. You know this if you are a Bikram yogi or not: water is a life source. Sustaining, startlingly alive, and incredibly purifying, water helps us maintain a clean and healthy body, a renewed mind, a refreshed spirit.

Not only is it a physical necessity, but water holds its own spiritual significance. Often a symbol of purification, birth, simplicity, even eternal life, water is a sacred resource in our world today. A political, social and philosophically resonant entity, we should consider water a hot topic in societies around the globe, both those that have it abundantly and those who need it.

Swimming? For the win. Thanks, water!

Thanks to Blog Action Day 2010, I'd like to share a few insightful facts and figures on the current state of water in the world. I would love your feedback, and feel free to share these freely with those you know!

Water as a Human Right: In July, the United Nations declared access to clean water and sanitation a human right over objection from the United States. Today, nearly one billion people lack basic access to safe drinking water.

Uninhabitable Rivers: Today, 40% of America’s rivers and 46% of America’s lakes are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or aquatic life. That’s not surprising considering the fact that 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, storm water, and industrial waste are discharged into US waters annually.

Food Footprint: Do you know the water footprint of your food? For example, 75 liters of water are required to make a glass of beer and 15,500 liters to make a kilogram of beef.

Technology Footprint: On an average day, 500 billion liters of water travel through US power plants to power all the technology that we use every day. For example, that shiny new iPhone in your pocket requires half a liter of water to charge. That may not seem like much, but with approximately 6.4 million active iPhones in the US, that’s 3.2 million liters to charge those alone.

Bottled Water: Even though people in the US have access to clean water from their taps, they drink an average of 200 bottles of water per person each year. Over 17 million barrels of oil are needed to manufacture those water bottles, 86 percent of which will never be recycled.

You can make a difference.
If we all started small, the world could change in a flash.

I encourage you to take a few easy steps to ensure that you're leaving a light footprint:
  • Drink tap water from a reusable bottle (made with safe plastic, of course!). Encourage yogis at your studio to do the same. Boycott the bottled water for sale!
  • Use common sense at home: turn off faucets, do light laundry loads, use less while washing dishes. These little moments add up to a great source of water each and every day. Also adjust your sprinklers so they only water your lawn, not the sidewalk!
  • Replace the shower head with a more water-efficient one, especially if you're like me and spend more than 10 minutes in there. Ask your yoga studio to do the same!
Hey, that's a pretty fountain. Fill your water bottle instead of buying plastic!
  • Take action. Think about joining a group like End Water Poverty, who is lobbying national leaders and taking international action through campaigns like its new The World Walks for Water events (6km walks around the world where participants will demand that global leaders ensure real change toward clean water and sanitation for all). You can also check out their Facebook page, follow them on Twitter, or sign the pledge. Every little bit helps!
  • Tell a friend, and have that friend tell a friend. Share this important message with those you know and love -- and those you don't know! Strike up a conversation at lunch with your coworkers today.
  • Read some blog posts today. Blog Action Day 2010 is off and running! Check out more awesome posts here.

Focus Forward Friday: Be Passionate. Go Crazy.

All stills are taken from the video itself. Check it out!

Focus Forward Friday: A weekly ritual for deepening your Bikram practice.

Today's focus: pure passion. So I've got another sweet video to share from Pacing the Panic Room. Can you imagine balancing high above the world like these ladies?

    They are fearless. Beautiful. Elated.

The film was made by renowned filmmaker and mountain guide Sebastien Montaz-Rosset of Je ne sais quoi Films. You can find him on Facebook here. I'm absolutely stunned, pleased, and terrified by the thought of walking a rope that high up. Can you imagine? Have you ever taken on something wild like that -- skydiving or bungee jumping or something?

I may parasail one day, but I'm not so sure about this! Props to those who can handle the heights and wind, though. Can you imagine what a day up there would do for your Bikram practice? Standing in the hot room would feel like cake in comparison. I love it!

    Happy Friday, yogis!

Guys Who Bikram: What's Your Story?

Alright, dudes. It's your time on Alive in the Fire!

Have you heard? I'm collecting stories from male yogis with enthusiasm, experience and humility about their yoga journey. I'd love to hear from you!

Send me a message: aliveinthefire@gmail.com. Please include some background on how you found your yoga, why you love it, what your favorite posture is, perhaps some goals for the future, and of course photos! Not required, but highly encouraged. Tell your friends, too!

I love the guys in my life dearly and truly admire them for their ability to be masculine and yet compassionate, to pursue their passions, to enjoy life, and to kick butt at what they do. I believe real men know that there's more to their manliness than just testosterone and pride; being a man also means loving unconditionally and letting go sometimes, too.

All of these sexy men know how to do just that.

Thanks for being awesome, guys. You are the kind of friends, husbands, brothers, and fathers that some people wish for, but I'm lucky enough to enjoy every day. I love you!

...Oh, and let me know when you want to come to yoga! I'd love to drag you into the heat for a real workout.

    Do What You Love

Photography by Ryan of Pacing the Panic Room. I take no credit!

One of my favorite bloggers ever, Ryan of Pacing the Panic Room, just posted an awesome video that's the first in his series with Gap about women who do what they love.

The beautiful cinematography features a pretty lady executing lovely yoga postures on the beach, the sun in the distance and the wind playing at her hair.

It's a scene worth soaking in -- and a concept really worth thinking about. What if you pursued your dreams, starting now? What if you threw all those crazy excuses out the window and really did what you love instead of wondering what that would feel like?

My challenge to you, Ryan's challenge, Gap's challenge, as shown by the project:

Be a woman who lives her life on her own terms, and finds success.

I know you can do it. Take the chance; try. See what happens.

More about the project here. And do check out Pacing the Panic Room and consider buying the Do Fun Stuff album. Pacing is such a wonderful spot to read about real relationships, family life, and the roller coaster ride of raising kiddos with your whole heart. Thanks, Ryan, for continuing to engage in quality work! I'll be keeping up on the series.

Real Men Do Yoga: What's Your Story?

YO MEN OF THE BIKRAM WORLD: I want to hear from you!

If you are interested in being featured on Alive in the Fire, now is your chance. Simply type up a few words about your practice, why you love your yoga (whether it's Bikram or another style), your favorite pose, and anything else you'd like to share.

Photos are highly encouraged, but not required by any means.

Spread the word. Share your story.

Uncommon Ground, Stomping Ground for Uncommon Artists

Tasty chai. Their menu at the restaurant is fantastic -- everything's fresh, and most is organic and local too. Mmm.

Last night I ventured down to Uncommon Ground, a ridiculously cool and beautifully green Chicago restaurant featuring some talented musicians. Their atmosphere is lovely -- low lighting (candles + sparkly decorative lights), fall and Halloween items scattered around, and gorgeous original artwork.

The painting hanging in front of our table displayed these big, puffy, white clouds and dreamy-looking tropical birds floating around in bubbles. It was earthy and unreal. Quite dreamy!

    Sweet signage outside along

Even the gorgeous bathroom decor -- with its mosaic mirror and tree ceramics lining the walls -- made me smile.

But the real treat? Calming, relaxed music in a seriously sweet venue. I had never heard her before, but Shuling recommended we come down to check out Kelsey Wild, an NU student and very talented folk singer/songwriter who can also jam on the guitar and piano. Kelsey really belted it out, and her clever lyrics, subdued charm, and hilariously cute shiny shoes and bright orange socks gave me warm fuzzy feelings. I was so happy when Shu gifted me the EP (Wishing Well) featuring each song we listened to, so now I can enjoy her tunes at home.

In case you're wondering, she played: Wishing Well, Fun, Ghost Song, Salt, and The War.

Bravo, Kelsey! If you'd like to find out more info, check out her website (link above on her name) or her contact page here.

Next up it was Landon Smith, a guitar-strummin' guy from Texas who reminded me a lot of Matt Nathanson and Dave Barnes and a little bit of Brett Dennen. He told some great stories about surviving broken equipment, growing up sorta cross-eyed, and performing in front of fans who were convinced he was weeping. Don't worry, Landon, we believed you: sweat dripping in the eyes is no fun; believe me, we Bikram yogis know it! Anyway, thanks for the awesome entertainment, wise words, and wicked talent in front of that mic!

One of the songs Landon played featured his friend Matt Jones, another artist at the show last night. We missed Matt's set since we arrived a bit late, but I loved their collaboration song called "Enjoy the Ride' (it's apparently featured in a teen flick that I hadn't heard of but, according to Landon, is "killin' it overseas!") Keep up the film work, guys. :)

Check out some of Landon's music and silly videos with Matt here. I know I'll be listening 'til I've got lyrics like this memorized:

I will love you as much as I want you to love me...
(from "Roseanne," a song inspired by Landon's real family members)

Some are scared are living without somebody by their side
You won't control your future; ask anyone who's ever tried
You may not get where you're going... so enjoy the ride.
(from "Enjoy the Ride," the collaboration between Matt and Landon)

Thanks for the great show, guys! Keep in touch and let us know when you're in Chi-town again. Best of luck in your travels & namaste.

Focus Forward Friday: Sit Up Straight

Focus Forward Friday: A weekly ritual for deepening your Bikram practice.

Today's focus: health of the spine! My lovelies, I have some news. As it turns out, my cervical spine isn't in the best of shape. I recently went to the chiropractor and discovered that things have gone from bad to worse as far as my upper curve in the neck goes. The blessing in all of it is that most of the degeneration is (mostly) fixable as long as I stick with treatment and get passionate about sitting up straight. Believe me, it's top of mind!

Anyway, I've realized this week just how important it is to have healthy posture when you're sitting at the desk, watching TV, riding the bike, etc. It's also critical to get your spine checked by a chiropractor because you may have problems without any symptoms or pain. Believe me: it's better to deal with it now, before it hurts, before the damage is irreparable.

If you can, please pray for healing for me and feel free to share your thoughts below. I'd love any advice or thoughts you have on keeping your spine in great shape and for toughing it out when health problems arise. I will keep you posted on the journey and I promise I won't lose hope! As Bikram says,

"It's never to late to start from scratch again."

    Those Bikram Boys

What's the guy to girl ratio at your studio like? Do you have a lot of men willing to tough it out in the heat where you practice?

Man, I love those strong, tall guys who practice alongside all the dainty girls in bikini tops and Shakti shorts. My favorite are the 40-somethings at Bikram Yoga Evanston that I think look like firemen. I mean, if they can handle the yoga (with their tight hips and broad shoulders), so can anyone. Not so sure I'm crazy about guys who wear super short shorts, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do to survive the Torture Chamber, eh?

YogaDork recently discovered this awesome NYT article about guys layin' down their mats and kicking some ass. There was also an interesting entry about guys in the Army doing yoga in order to promote strength and stress relief. I love it!

Now if I could only drag my big brother to class... :)

Do you yoga with your guy? Know male friends or teachers at the studio?

I want to hear your story! I am going to feature a story on guys who Bikram in the near future and I'd love for you to be a part of it. I am looking for 3-4 paragraphs about who you know, what their practice is like, their favorite posture, and how Bikram yoga makes them feel like a real man. You can write about someone you know, or have your sexy guy write a little blurb. Feel free to be creative. Have fun. And if you know of anyone, please spread the word!

Comment below your contact info and I will get a hold of you about your story. Photographs highly encouraged, but not required. And if Bikram's not your style, no worries. I'd still love to hear from you.

    REAL MEN DO (BIKRAM) YOGA.
Coming soon to Alive in the Fire!

Check out this ridiculousness. We fist pump in our fancies after the wedding. Hey, if I can make a fool of myself, so can you!

The Big Book of Yoga: Read it for Free!

Free yoga resource: The Big Book of Yoga!

I just discovered an awesome online resource for you Hatha yogi fiends out there. Check out The Big Book of Yoga! Andrew G. Reece has treated us to a great guide to the practice. He's been doing yoga for 10 years+ and lives out on the east coast. I love that he included a gratitude page as well, as a way of honoring and thanking his mentors.

And the dedication may be the most beautiful part of all:

"May all who read this book benefit from it; may this book contribute to the increase of happiness, and the decline of suffering everywhere; may all beings be happy, healthy, and safe; may we all recognize yoga in this and every moment!"

Want to get a hold of Andrew? Leave him some feedback? Go here. Consider thanking him for sharing this lovely gift with the yoga community. Namaste, Andrew and the team!

Also, speaking of online resources, if you still haven't seen my friend Shuling's video about the Seth Godin conference, you should check it out. Featuring photos from yours truly. What an inspiring event it was! Miss you, fellow linchpins! Thanks, Seth and Ishita, for all your hard work that day. And to Shuling for bringing together some beautiful storytelling here. A talented bunch, I must say!

Check out the awesome video here. Or read Seth's blog!

Life in Balance: Bikram Choudhury's Guide

It has been a beautiful cool, crisp fall day!

Photo via Mastin Studio's Blog. Doesn't this couple look sweet?

This evening I enjoyed a eucalyptus sea salt bath. Candle. Icelandic chocolate squares. Bikram Choudhury's Bikram Yoga: The Guru Behind Hot Yoga Shows the Way to Radiant Health and Personal Fulfillment. Great reading on why the yoga's hot:

"We put incredible pressure on you to teach you to break your attachment to external things and go within. Instead of blaming others for your own weakness, fear and depression, you will learn to take resonsibility for your own life. You've got to face yourself in the mirror, every part you don't like, every mistake you make, every excuse your mind creates to limit your potential liberation -- there's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. No escape from reality."

This morning: two pumpkin pies baked. Kitchen cleaned. Chai tea. Bike ride (in the rain) to the Evanston Green Living Fest. Awesome vendors. Passed out all my cards for Alive in the Fire and editZING. Chatted with people who are passionate about healthy cleaning products, composting, and shopping for local produce. Found a new chiropractor that I'm excited to try out.

The sun came out for a few minutes during the festival today.

Last night: Saw The Social Network. Loved this movie. High-quality script, acting, cinematography (especially the crew scene on the water!), music and storyline. Really made me want to invent the next big thing, or at least come up with a cool idea. Enjoyed a frozen yogurt date with a friend featuring honeydew flavor and mochi. Delicious!

Jesse Eisenberg rocks a stellar performance in the film. And it does make you wonder about friendships, money, and the value of each.

Tomorrow: Bikram class, more reading, brunch with friends. I'm contributing a tasty egg & sausage casserole (and maybe a slice or two of pumpkin pie!). Strawberries, too. There may be a visit later in the day to Evanston's Bike the Ridge event, perhaps a photo shoot of the leaves changing color. The possibilities remain open!

I hope your weekend is fun, festive, and restful. Do what you love! Do your yoga. Be present in what truly is reality: the mirror right in front of you.

Focus Forward Friday: Get the Word Out about Your Yoga

Hey lovelies! Check out my new business card! Lovely, eh? Many thanks to my friend Heather for sharing the tree design. Someday, I want to tattoo it on me, too...I'll be a walking poster child for her art and my Bikram! Talk about an easy way to share my yoga story :) Note: if you're interested in posting this, please feel free, but give credit where credit is due.

Focus Forward Friday: A weekly ritual for deepening your Bikram practice.

Today's focus: yogavangelism! My lovely, J, just posted about this phenomenon: the need to spread the word about yoga. That desire we feel to tell the lady at the grocery store, or our doctor, or our colleagues at work, "Dude, you've got to try this Bikram class!" We all feel it. But do we share?

Sometimes speaking up can be a challenge. Will people judge us? Will they laugh? Or will they listen?

You never know what change you  might make in the world -- in life of someone you know, care about, love -- if you just take the risk and use your words. Be willing to share your Bikram story. It doesn't have to be cheesy, slimy like a salesman, or long-winded. It just has to be true, from the heart. Speak up today!

105 Yoga Opening in Oak Park, Chicago

Hey friends. So I've got some exciting news to announce for local yogis in the Chicago area. Want to try Bikram? Are you a regular and want to try a new studio?

105 Yoga is opening soon in Oak Park, Chicago!

One of my favorite teachers from Bikram Yoga Evanston has branched out and is taking the leap to start her own space. I'm so proud of her!

Nancy is a compassionate, smart, and superbly motivating teacher who really knows her stuff and sticks to the foundations of Bikram's teachings. She delivers a stellar and dynamic dialogue, and is one of those naturals who can pick up on everyone's name even if it's your first class. My favorite is when she reminds us to quiet the Monkey Mind, that ever-present nagging voice in the back of our head that makes us crazy all the time.

In Nancy's classes, you find stillness and peace and you end up proud of yourself for the work you've done in the heat. As she once reminded us in class, "You're worth more than a hundred bucks!"

I love 105 Yoga's look & feel, and the yoga quotes that Nancy shares on the site. Here's one:

"Faithfulness in the performance of small duties gives us strength to adhere to difficult determinations that life will someday force us to make."
    -Paramahansa Yogananda (1893 - 1952)

This is so true! Only when we stick it out, when we suffer through the pain, when we let go -- only then can we truly be healed and become stronger in ourselves.

    Another one she shared:

"I will be calmly active, actively calm. I am a prince of peace, sitting on the throne of poise, directing the kingdom of my activity."
    -Paramahansa Yogananda (1893 - 1952)

This is beautiful. Can you picture yourself a prince of peace next time you're in class doing one of the harder postures? How about a peaceful Triangle pose? Can you relax even in the struggle?

Try it. Challenge yourself. You may just be surprised by what you find.

Keep up with 105 Yoga's site for their progress, class schedule, and pricing. If you need more info on why it'd be great to try the yoga, go here.

And of course feel free to contact Nancy directly.

Oh, and enjoy all of the photos on the site -- they feature yogis at Bikram Yoga Evanston! (No, I'm not in there. But Nancy is, along with some of my favorite people ever!) Strong postures, peaceful people. That's the yoga.

Namaste, Nancy. Congrats and best wishes on your beautiful studio!

    Blog Action Day 2010: WATER

I'm participating in a great cause coming up and if you blog, you should too!

    Check it out:

More to come soon. Stay tuned. And enjoy your day!

Note: apologies for the repeated image/content up top right now, but I want to get the word out about this. :)

A Killer Frying Pan: Thanks, CSN Stores!

Once upon a time, there was a girl who loved the clean, bright, peaceful atmosphere of an empty kitchen. It always enticed her to cook new and delicious dishes with fresh ingredients and exotic flavors.

One morning, she discovered the perfect dish: tagliani primavera. A creamy noodle, ham and vegetable dish featuring some of her favorites. Fresh asparagus. Smoked prosciutto. Real whipping cream. Heaven!

She knew she had to make it. But what cookware would she use?

Ah! The perfect frying pan! A beautiful red pan that would fit the ingredients just right. The generously-gifted sample product from CSN Stores! It was meant to be.

She donned her new kitchen apron and set to work.
She cooked. She smiled. She smelled. She tasted.

A more serious note about the pan, fairytales aside :)

This Trimmer Gourmet Chef 10" x 10" pan is a stellar product. Top-notch, beautifully made, lovely color. Keeps heat even and thorough while you're cooking on the stove, and the coating was in premium condition to keep anything from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Many thanks to CSN Stores for carrying this and hundreds of other awesome products for your home. And for having a wonderful staff of extremely helpful and responsive people!

The size is great for working with large dishes. In fact, I probably could not have made this recipe without it!

Also note: the photos don't accurately capture the gorgeous thunderstorm I could hear in the distance, the quiet fall of rain outside the window, or the awesome Phil Collins songs I was blasting while I paraded around the kitchen.

It was love, pure love. What are you cooking lately?

Here's the recipe for you to try if you like. Thanks to my stepmom for sharing it!

    Tagliarini Primavera

1/2 lb asparagus, cut diagonally into 1 inch lengths
    1/2 lb mushrooms, sliced
    1/4 c slivered prosciutto
    1/4 butter or margarine
    1 med carrot, sliced thin
    1 med zucchini, diced
    8 oz. thin noodles
    3 green onions, sliced
    1/2 c frozen peas, thawed
    1 teaspoon dry basil
    1/2 teaspoon salt
Dash of ground nutmeg and of white pepper
1/2 pint (1 cup) whipping cream
    1/4 c Parmesan
    fresh chopped parsley
*Note: I also added fresh spinach to the mix, about 3/4 cup. Also, I suggest using the rest of the whipping cream to make homemade whipped cream to go on a pie or ice cream.

Melt butter in frying pan, sauté mushrooms, prosciutto, asparagus, carrot and zucchini. Cook 3 minutes.
Boil water for noodles and prepare per package directions. To vegetable mixture, add green onion, peas, basil, salt, nutmeg, pepper and cream. Cook on medium-high until mixture boils and forms shiny bubbles. Pour sauce over noodles, lift and mix gently until coated with sauce. Add Parmesan and mix again. Top with fresh parsley. Yields 4-6 servings.
Eat with a pineapple VitaCoco and you'll be completely re-charged after Bikram class!

Focus Forward Friday: Mix it Up!

You see that silly graffiti-like illustration? Yeah, well, it's actually serious business. The picture's from (can you guess?) Starbucks, the inventor of Rituals. Sure, you need your cafe latte just right, but no drama in yoga class. No drama, my friends.

Focus Forward Friday: A weekly ritual for deepening your Bikram practice.

Today's focus: please don't create rituals for yourself in the Hot Room! How many of you set up your mat in the same place every time you practice? Have to have a certain water bottle to survive class? Require a specific amount of distance between your body and your fellow yogi classmates?

Get out of your own head! This is madness! No drama in the room. No craziness. You don't need all the fuss you think you do. It's just like when you resist the urge to wipe sweat, fix your hair, pull on your shorts. You don't need it. You think you do, but you don't.

All you need is the breath, in and out, the still mind, the postures. Cut all the other crap and watch how it transforms your yoga!

I'm over halfway through 30 days of straight Bikram every day, my big challenge. And I leave the rituals at the door. I change up my location in the room between where it's hot and cool, crowded and spread out, close to the mirror or far away. I bring different water bottles, and sometimes I don't drink at all.

I rely on nothing but the teacher's words and my body's movement to get me through class. Because that's all it is: THE YOGA. Not the drama, not the madness. Not the Monkey Mind. And guess what? I have better, more strengthening classes because of this conscious decision to be aware. To let go.

Just do the yoga. Pick something new to let go of today. Challenge yourself. Set your intention.

    And then stick to it.

My papa is in Colorado for work right now, and he recently sent me this beautiful picture of what he calls aspens that are a riotous shade of yellow. I couldn't agree more. And how beautiful when you find something simple, pure, serene. Love you, Dad!

Loving Lululemon's New Eagle Bra, Dark Icelandic Chocolate & Design Blogs

Lululemon Athletica carries awesome yogi wear and travel bags. Their stuff is top notch! Photo from their website.

Oh hey again. How's your Thursday afternoon turning out?

Mine is pretty lovely. I'm enjoying a little square of dark Icelandic chocolate (thanks, Whole Foods!), a glass of Cera Sport pomegranate acai berry rehydration mix, and a glance at this new blog I love, For Once, Then, Something.

    I'm also meditating on this:

Yoga is the stilling of the changing states of the mind.
    - The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

I'm saying aaaaaaaah. Heading to Bikram soon. It's super hot and humid here today, so I'm guessing the room will feel cooler than usual. I hope. I'm sleepy!

I think I'll wear my new Lulu bra that a friend treated me to. It's comfortable, supportive, and sexy. Pretty much a perfect fit!

Now for some rockin' out to folk music (or terribly indulgent pop) on my way to the studio. Enjoy your evening, yogis!

I Dare You to Change the World

    Happy Thursday, yogis!

Yep, that's right, I put this little photo illustration together. Hope it inspires you to live big!

What are you up to as we usher in the autumn season?

I'm off to a community lunch for Evanston business owners who want financial advice, then I'm tuning in to a Google webinar on Search Engine Optimization. Should be an informative afternoon!

Just wanted to send you a quick little inspirational message for the day.

I dare you to dream big.

I dare you to be the person you really want to be, today. Who you were made to be.

I dare you to change the world!

This one is via Flickr. Did you know you hold your future, and the future of our world, in your hands?

Feels Like Summer: A Guest Post from a Friend who Attended The Renegade Craft Fair

All photos and review below by the talented Sarah Klein, a friend of mine who's livin' it up in Chi-town. And about to start Bikram too!

So a few weeks back I hoped to make it down to the lovely Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago, but I missed out. I was super busy all weekend...but fortunately a talented and gracious friend of mine, Sarah, checked it out and took some beautiful photos to prove it!
    Here's her stellar review.
    The Renegade Craft Fair Chicago
    A Review by Sarah Klein

Division street was packed. I've honestly never seen so many indie-artistic-looking 20-somethings in one place. Walking around, I was greeted by colorful pottery and screen prints, the smell of funnel cake and lemonade, multi-colored sunglasses, and a girl creating giant bubbles with a bubble wand. It felt like summer.

What struck me was how many of the products were recycled and re-purposed material... jewelry made from old maps and typewriter keys, bags and clothing made from reused plastic and wool, and stand upon stand of recycled paper goods. The first stand i went into was full of hand-made cards and journals with quirky prints on the covers. I bought myself a journal with two purple upside down octopuses on the cover.

There is something very satisfying about buying a craft straight from an artist, even if it's only a silly journal. I spent a few hours wandering around, taking pictures, and people watching. I ended the day with a funnel cake and a sleepy bus ride home. Yay local crafts!

The Yoga Is Supposed To Hurt: An Inspiring Teacher-in-Training

Video interview via Bikram Yoga Manhattan on YouTube.

"The only way out is through."

So says Bikram Yoga Manhattan's Jeanne Heaton, a yogi with an inspiring story that's about to get even more inspiring. And yes, she was talking about the experience of pushing through the pain that Bikram yoga can bring our bodies and minds, and the fact that the only way we can relieve that pain is to undergo it. As my teachers often say during Locust Pose: "Experience pain in the elbows now, so you don't have to outside this room."

It may be surprising at first to discover that sometimes Bikram yoga is supposed to hurt, but it's true. It's not all candles and bubble bath, like some other yoga practices.

Sometimes it hurts, and that hurt makes us stronger, tougher, better.

Anyway, back to a lady I've never met but who I admire already... Jeanne was interviewed during a series done by BYM's studio where they chat with local teachers about their practice, what it's like to the life of a yogi, and the experience of training with Boss himself.

"If it hurts, do it more," she says, smiling and gesturing. "Until it goes away. I didn't believe that was true until I experienced that myself."

What honest, beautiful words. No doubt, this can surely be a challenge, as Jeanne is ready to admit in the video. She talks about the way Western medicine generally prefers that patients who are suffering stop doing whatever it is that's bringing the pain. But in the East, and in our yoga, we learn that in order to get over the hurt, we must endure it first.

During her interview, Jeanne also spoke about her motivation to become a teacher once she received a scholarship for the Fall San Diego Teacher Training session.

"In order to keep what you have, you have to give it away. So that's what I see happening around the studio. In order to stay here and be healthy, I believe that I have to teach it so that I can help others...I totally identify with others' struggles. This yoga is about service."

I couldn't have said it better myself! The yoga inspires us to give, compassionately, and share it with those around us. This is a huge part of why I want to complete the training, too: it's not just about my own practice, but about encouraging passion in others to stick with the yoga.

"Health and love and service. That kind of complete change is what people do in here," as Jeanne said.

Since the beginning of my Bikram experience, I've been amazed at the solid community of practioners that come together. Whether we're chatting or laughing in the studio lobby before and after class, or sweating it out like crazy on our mats, moving as one, we learn and benefit from the presence of each other.

And that "Namaste" that we utter at the end of class truly starts to mean something, to take on true value.

The good in me sees the good in you.

As they say in Avatar, "I see you." I get who you are, where you're coming from, and I wholly accept who you are and what your purpose is in this world. I'm glad for you. That's the real kind of namaste.

Jeanne put it this way: "This is the right place to have community and love." Have you considered the weight of a statement like that lately?

What if you actively pursued community and love at your yoga studio? What if you gave up a little bit of yourself -- your personality, gifts, time -- to benefit those who practice beside you in the Hot Room? What would change?

My guess: your whole life, your whole practice.

I can picture Jeanne here in the Teacher Training tent where she's rockin' out on her mat and learning to deliver the dialogue like a true master. Hope it's going well, Jeanne, and best of luck in your beautiful life! Photo via The Missus on her BKTT blog.
