Yoga with Animals (Rawr!)

Do you ever practice yoga with your pets?

Sometimes this happens unintentionally... if you set up your mat in the middle of the living room and your dog or cat is interested, they might join you for a pose or two.

I love that yoga helps us relate to nature on many levels. When we take tree pose, we experience the world from a tree's perspective, even if only for a moment. The same is true of frog pose, or downward dog, or crow.

We begin to sing a different song; a different vibration moves through us, bringing us more in tune with all the life around us, whether it's plant or animal based.

This asana practice of taking different animal shapes in the body also helps us shed the ego.

When I flow from mountain pose to forward fold, into plank, back to down dog... by the time I finish my cycle of breathing, I have forgotten I am a woman. I become a fluid movement, an ever-shifting identity. I come closer to an empty mind, a clear mind, a pure meditation.

Which animal shapes in yoga are your favorite? :)

Also, if you send me a photo of you practicing yoga with your pet, I'll feature you in a post and send you a little something special. Email me at aliveinthefire at gmail dot com!

One final note to you local yogis... I encourage you to come to Dharma Yoga Evanston (1321 Emerson St, Evanston, Illinois 60201) this Friday from 4:30-6:30pm to enjoy the wonderful teaching of Nicole Sopko. She's hosting an Advanced Dharma class. All are welcome.

The proceeds will benefit her dog, who just had major surgery. Come support Nicole and her sweet pup! See you there. Namaste.
