“True transformation in a yoga practice comes from doing the poses we resist while at the same time working to change the mind about the experience.”

Do you have a pose you consider your nemesis? One you habitually find yourself avoiding in class, where instead of trying it, you find any excuse to fix your hair, head to the bathroom, or withdraw in child's pose?

Lately, for me, it's Hanumanasana. My hips immediately cry, "No!" and my mind races with thoughts of pain. During the poses I resist, I find the drishti point can be most helpful since it focuses my attention.

How can we let go of anticipation with yoga postures? I believe the key here is to remain focused on the breath, and to trust in the teacher's words. Concentrate on relaxing whichever muscles aren't needed in the pose. Challenge yourself to breathe and find some comfort in the pose. There is always something new to discover.

Stay in for a few more breaths than you thought possible. Chances are, your body needs this pose the most.
